This is a piece inspired by Halloween. Halloween always invokes some strange feelings - nothing scary, but rather somewhat mysterious, secretive, and seductive, tinged with the regret of separation and the passing of time.

To capture the confluence of these diverse sentiments, I created this painting titled "Apparition," a saturated space where ghostly translucent shapes with meaningful gestures flicker and scurry around, casting a fantastical and supernatural spell, and in such, I hope that I have captured the essence of this mystical all-saints day (Día de Todos los Santos).

When I painted this "Jubilant", I chose an array of colors, especially blues, greens, and reds, which is especially broad as they included maroon, red, and purple. These colors of relatively brighter or darker hue, higher or lower intensity, carried their own characteristics. I was able to arrange them in a juxtaposing array, as if enacting a scene on a stage.

These colors include my go-to colors: shades of blue, and gray, for example. But they also include colors I found challenging and unwieldy (greens), and unexciting (marron or brown). Yet, all colors contribute to the overall effect and the red and light green become more pronounced and exciting because of the comparison against the duller brown. Lighter brown nested inside a darker ones generated another interesting detail.

Naturally, the shapes and movements of these color patches affected their characters and relationships; therefore, colors are important, but they are not the only things that matter.

This is a class assignment on the theme of alter ego. This painting documents my restive and sometimes chaotic nature, especially my refusing to be confined to rules and norms. The contrasting bright colors of yellow and purple demand to be noticed, and the splashes of gray and white added movements and spontaneity to the ever-shifting focal points.

"Bulwark" focuses on contrasts between foreground and background, and the repeating and echoing patterns on the foreground and background. The patterns in the foreground of charcoal on paper, are the study of the markings on the tree barks, and of their subtle repetition and divagations. These subtle changes contrasted strongly with the placement of these paper stripes on the abstract background, whose pattern also echoes those in the foreground and reminiscences of the tree branches surrounding the strongly outlined "trunks".

The painting as a whole, though inspired by realistic objects, the finished image can be seen as a study of contrasts and variations.

This piece is a collage of stripes of graphite imprint on paper on a background painted in gouache.
